TO CHDC
CHILD
HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
located in Old Mulago Hospital next to Paediatric Ward,
is an interdisciplinary specialized
multi-sectoral institution of Makerere
University fostering national capacity building for
child survival and development through operational research
and training. The institution maintains strong linkages
with government bodies, community groups, Non Governmental
Organizations and service provider groups.
Research
Capacities Available
The CHDC has both manpower and infrastructure to meet its
objectives
(a) CHDC staff provides
expertise on many health and development issues, including;
- Conducting and
teaching quantitative and qualitative research.
- Conducting and teaching participatory research.
- Health information systems and the application of information
to action.
- Child Nutrition.
- Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS.
- Health Financing.
(b) The CHDC maintains a research database with information
on persons who have done research and are willing to do
research through the Centre. This database is regularly
used to identify good researchers.
(c) The Centre has a modern computer Lab with facilities
that are used for management of large databases. The centre
also has up-to-date software for both qualitative and quantitative
data management. Some computers may be made available for
field data entry it also has a LAN-Local Area Network, Internet
managed by IT administrator.
(d) The CHDC Library
has a substantial material on both published and grey literature
on the health situation of women and children in Uganda.
These resources are collected and updated during research
and training activities carried out by CHDC staff. The Library
has subscribed to a number on international Social Science
and Medical journals and has a 24 hour Internet access to
online journals and is pursuing the PERI project connection
that will give it free access to at least 3000 Medical journals.
(e) The office support system includes facilities for bulk
photocopying of reading and training materials, binding
of documents.
(f) The CHDC produces
a quarterly Newsletter on Mother and Child Health Issues
(MOCHEDI) on topical issues and research carried out by
the Centre staff. About 500 copies are made and circulated
to other libraries, clients and interested people.
(g) Four-wheel drive vehicles suitable for upcountry activities.
